1月8日は成人の日。
１９４８（昭和２３）年に、１月１５日に制定された国民の祝日。２０００（平成１２）年から１月の第２月曜日に変更。「おとなになったことを自覚し、みずから生き抜こうとする青年を祝いはげます」ことが趣旨。
