１９５２（昭和２７）年、ボクシング世界フライ級タイトルマッチで、挑戦者の白井義男選手がチャンピオンのダド・マリノ選手に判定勝ちし、日本人初のチャピオンに輝いた。

１８リットル缶の日

5月18日は１８リットル缶の日。

全国１８リットル缶工業組合連合会が制定。１８リットル缶は、従来５ガロン缶と呼ばれていたが、１８リットル缶に名称が統一されたことを記念したもの。日付は５ガロンの５と、１８リットルの１８から５月１８日に。
