1月14日は愛と希望と勇気の日。

１９５９（昭和３４）年のこの日、南極観測船「宗谷」が昭和基地に着き、前年に置き去りにした１５頭のカラフト犬のうち、タロとジロが生きていたのを発見。生きることへの希望と愛することを忘れないために制定。

1月13日は咸臨丸出航記念日。

１８６０年のこの日、江戸幕府の軍艦「咸臨丸」が、日米修好通商条約の批准のため、勝海舟、福沢諭吉、中浜万次郎らの遣米使節を乗せて品川沖を出航した。
