１９４８（昭和２３）年に、１月１５日に制定された国民の祝日。２０００（平成１２）年から１月の第２月曜日に変更。「おとなになったことを自覚し、みずから生き抜こうとする青年を祝いはげます」ことが趣旨。

この日の朝、春の七草（セリ、ナズナ、ゴギョウ、ハコベラ、ホトケノザ、スズナ、スズシロ）を入れたおかゆを食べると健康に過ごせるという。

「い（１）ろ（６）」の語呂合わせから、カラーコーディネーターなど、色に関係する職業の人たちの記念日になっている。
